Moldovan president participates in UN Climate Change Conference

President Nicolae Timofti today participated in the United Nations Climate Change Conference, held in Paris. 

The head of state gave a speech at the event, in which he referred to Moldova's contribution to reducing the climate changes and unveiled the country's vision on international environmental policies. 

"Our country promotes the principles of sustainable development and actively contributes to achieving the objectives of the frame convention on climate changes (...). The Moldovan government has set the national goals, in order to cut greenhouse gas emissions  in key sectors, such as transport, agriculture, industry and waste management. Till 2020, the energy consumption is to be diminished by 20 per cent, and 20 per cent of the consumed energy be produced from renewable sources," Nicolae Timofti said.

Timofti also said that Moldova's commitments for this sector were contained in the text of the Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union, under implementation. "We will increasingly focus  on the Agreement, after the overcoming of the political crisis through which we are going at present," the president stressed.

In beginning of his speech, the head of state paid homage to the victims of the Paris terror attacks. "Our presence in Paris is the proof of solidarity with the French nation and the victims of the 13 November terroristic attacks," President Timofti said.

 

On visit to the French capital, Nicolae Timofti had a string of informal meetings with heads of state and government. Timofti exchanged opinions with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, Albanian President Bujar Nishani, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas. Also, the Moldovan president had an official meeting with his Serbian counterpart Tomislav Nikolic, within whom he discussed bilateral ties.
