President Maia Sandu met in Tokyo with several members of the Japanese legislature. During the meeting, the Head of State spoke to the Japanese parliamentarians about Moldova and our bilateral cooperation, as well as about the reforms carried out in the context of Moldova’s European integration process.
"I spoke about our struggle for democracy and the road to the European Union, about our efforts to reform key sectors and build a state where every citizen enjoys respect. I mentioned the excellent relationship we have with Japan, which is Moldova's third most important development partner, with generous contributions in agriculture and the health system, in local infrastructure", the Head of State stressed. Relevant examples include the USD 26.54 million 2KR project, which has enabled our farmers to increase their agricultural production. Moreover, the Government recently signed a grant agreement with the Japanese side, worth more than seven million euros, regarding high-tech equipment for five public medical institutions in the country.
President Maia Sandu also spoke about the uncertainty for the region because of Russia's war against Ukraine, highlighting the biggest problems Moldova is facing, as a result. "Diversification and energy efficiency projects will bring tangible results in time, but Moldova needs support now to stop depending on suppliers that use energy resources as a weapon," added the Head of State.
On the first day of the visit to Tokyo, the leader also met the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hiroyuki Hosoda. The discussion focused on regional security and bilateral cooperation. The Head of State expressed her conviction that, despite all the crises, Moldova will succeed in carrying out reforms, improving the business environment and becoming an attractive destination for investment.
