President Nicolae Timofti had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs

President of the Republic of Moldova Nicolae Timofti met today, 30 October current year, at the Presidential Residence, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs, who is on a working visit to our country.

President Timofti welcomed the Latvian official’s visit to Chisinau, stressing that it had a special significance in the context of Moldova’s European integration. “We value Latvia’s positive experience in European integration and we are interested in taking over the practices used by Latvia to reform its public institutions”, Nicolae Timofti said.

The Head of State also thanked Edgars Rinkēvičs for the financial support Latvia provided to the Republic of Moldova for modernisation of the democratic institutions in our country in sectors of education, justice and public administration.

For his part, the Latvian official emphasised that his visit was a strong signal of support on behalf of Latvia for the Republic of Moldova European integration aspirations. “Latvia speaks out for signing the Association Agreement and liberalisation of the visa regime with the European Union”, Edgars Rinkēvičs stated. The Latvian diplomat said that he was waiting for the next Eastern Partnership Summit, scheduled to be held in Riga in 2015. “I believe that the Republic of Moldova will be able to report at the 2015 reunion notable effects of its association with the European Union”, Rinkēvičs added.

At the end of the meeting Nicolae Timofti conveyed Edgars Rinkēvičs an invitation for the Latvian President Andris Bērziņš to visit the Republic of Moldova in the near future, before the Eastern Partnership summit due in Vilnius.
