Environmental cooperation discussed by President Maia Sandu and the European Commissioner for the Environment, Virginijus Sinkevičius

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, met today with the European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, who is on a working visit to our country. The officials discussed the environmental challenges faced by the Republic of Moldova and cooperation in this field.

The Head of State welcomed the forthcoming Association Agreement on our country's participation in the European Union's LIFE programme for environment and climate policy. The decree approving the signing of this document was issued by President Maia Sandu yesterday, 24 November and is to be signed tomorrow by Prime Minister Natalia Gavriliță and Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius. The Head of State said that the signing of this agreement will help the Republic of Moldova to find sustainable solutions to climate and environmental problems in line with EU strategies.

In particular, we need more projects to increase our country's resilience to climate change, but also to contribute to the Afforestation Programme, which is a priority of the government. In this context, the officials said that discussions, such as those held today at the Conference on climate change, organised under the auspices of the Presidency, should be as frequent and wide-ranging as possible.

Another priority, where we are counting on EU support, is the waste management strategy. President Maia Sandu underlined that more and more citizens want waste collection and recycling systems in their localities, but that the realisation of this complex programme will not be possible without the support of development partners.
