President Maia Sandu: "Urgent solutions are needed to stop the galloping rise in prices, so that people do not have to choose between bread and freedom"

Moldovan President Maia Sandu spoke today at the opening of the 26th Annual Round Table on Current Economic Issues on the theme "Antitheses, transformations, achievements in a changing world". The event is organized in Athens by The Economist.

Among the main topics addressed by the Head of State are the war in Ukraine and its socio-economic consequences for neighbouring countries and the world; the need to rebuild the global order based on human values and respect for international law; the importance of providing citizens with a safe and peaceful environment as a guarantee for the development of individuals and societies.

"We have taken advantage of this broad platform of discussion to advocate once again for an end to the Russian war against Ukraine - the greatest tragedy of this century, which we are all living in real time. We talked about the solidarity that our fellow citizens have shown towards Ukrainian refugees and the importance of remaining united as a country and as Europe. This is the only way to resist the economic, energy and security crises that have gripped our entire continent," said President Maia Sandu.

The head of state also said that high energy and food prices put even the strongest democracies to the test. "Urgent solutions are needed to stop the galloping rise in prices, so that people do not have to choose between bread and freedom," Maia Sandu said.

"We owe it to Ukraine to continue to support it - because no country in recent history has suffered and sacrificed as much as Ukraine has - to defend democracy and stop authoritarian tendencies. Our actions today will determine our life tomorrow", President Maia Sandu said in Athens.
