President Maia Sandu: "We want this war to end and people not to be forced to leave their homes"

The President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu held today a press conference on the current issues. The Head of State answered journalists' questions about the situation in the country and in the region in the context of the war launched 40 days ago by Russia against Ukraine. Maia Sandu referred particularly to the issue of possible sanctions against the Russian Federation, the security risks posed by the Transnistrian region and the rising prices.

According to the Head of State, Moldovan banks comply with all policies and restrictions imposed by the international institutions, including SWIFT, Visa and MasterCard. Maia Sandu also said that exports to the Russian Federation are almost non-existent at the moment and that re-exports will not be allowed. Regarding the situation in the Transnistrian region, President Maia Sandu reiterated that there were no signs of major changes for the time being, but security risks persist because of the Russian troops illegally stationing across the Dniester river.

President Maia Sandu also spoke today about Moldova's perspectives for joining the European Union, after applying for membership one month ago. The Head of State mentioned that Chisinau will soon receive a detailed survey from the European Commission, which will estimate our country's readiness in several areas. After that, Moldova will be assessed by the Commission - where are we, how advanced are we in different areas and what the next steps are?
