Moldovan president, Swedish envoy address reforms, support, projects

President Nicolae Timofti met Swedish Ambassador to Moldova Ingrid Tersman at the state residence today.

Timofti showed satisfaction with boosting of the bilateral political dialogue and praised the Swedish authorities’ support provided to Moldova in the European integration process.

Nicolae Timofti highlighted that Sweden was one of the most important development partners of Moldova and thanked for the consistent financial assistance provided to Moldova via numerous projects on strengthening democratic institutions and modernising infrastructure.

Timofti was confident that the new government, which was to be sworn in office by the parliament in legal terms, would continue Moldova’s European integration.

For her part, Ingrid Tersman said the Swedish authorities backed Moldova’s European integration efforts. Tersman underlined that the success of the reform programme depended on the political willingness of the new government to implement the provisions of the Association Agreement with the European Union.

Ingrid Tersman informed that 16 projects worth 37 million Euros, financed by the Swedish government, were presently under implementation in various sectors in Moldova.

Tersman said that Sweden wanted to contribute to implement a strategic management programme at the Interior Ministry. At the same time, representatives of Swedish Police, Prosecution and judicial system will pay a visit to Moldova, in order to convey their experience to Moldovan colleagues. Another goal is to adjust the activity of the National Agency for Food Safety to the European Union’s requirements.

The officials exchanged opinions on regional security, following the developments in Ukraine.
