President Nicolae Timofti met the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle

President of the Republic of Moldova Nicolae Timofti met today, 3 October current year, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle.

The head of state welcomed the presence of the EU official in Chisinau before the Eastern Partnership Summit due in Vilnius. “We will implement the reforms assumed within the Eastern Partnership’s programme, despite the reluctance of country’s inner and outer forces to the policy of rapprochement with the European Union. The Moldovan authorities have political will to achieve the set objectives”, the president said.

For his part, the EU Commissioner said that the reformation of justice and fighting corruption represented the main test for the Chisinau authorities in aligning to the European Union’s standards. “We do not want to hear only declarations of intentions. The reforms must yield results. Moldova’s future cannot be left at the mercy of officials who defy the law”, Štefan Füle said.

The European official expressed perplexity about recent decisions by the Constitutional Court. “The Venice Commission might contribute with solutions to the reformation of this court”, Štefan Füle noted.

The European Commissioner, who will participate in the Civil Society Forum within the Eastern Partnership, stressed the importance that the citizens display civic activism as an element of strengthening the democracy.
