Moldovan servicemen leave for international peacekeeping mission in Kosovo

President Nicolae Timofti today participated in a ceremony of detaching the National Army contingent to the international peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, carried out at the Chisinau International Airport.

Timofti delivered a speech to those present at the event:

“Dear soldiers, representatives of diplomatic staff, and honorable audience!

In my tenure of head of state and Supreme Commander of the armed forces, I am honored to be with you at the ceremony of detaching the National Army contingent to the international peacekeeping mission in Kosovo.

Moldova declared its willingness to back the international community in its efforts to set up a climate of peace and relief worldwide.

Moldova’s participation in the international peacekeeping operations under the aegis of the UN represents the country’s contribution to ensuring security and stability in the world.

This is the first participation of a military contingent of Moldova in a NATO mission, with the UN mandate.

I am convinced that our soldiers will be exemplary in this operation.

The peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, carried out in accordance with the resolution No 1244 of the UN Security Council, represents a test of loyalty of Moldova towards the commitments assumed within the international organizations.

Respecting the neutrality status of the country, the parliament decided that the Moldovan servicemen should join representatives of other 31 nations within the EU, NATO and partner countries, which will restore peaceful life in Kosovo.

It is a right decision that will enhance the reputation of our country towards international partners. Thus, we confirm we can be not just beneficiaries of security policies, but a security provider state.

Dear soldiers,.

I order you to carry out your mission and duty with honor and professionalism. We are waiting for you at home, with your families.

Experience you will acquire will be turned to good account in development of Moldova’s Armed Forces and in consolidation of peace between the two banks of the Dniester.

Good luck and thank you”.
